Managing High Conflict Personalities

Description
This virtual seminar will briefly address four key characteristics of high conflict personalities and four common mistakes that lawyers often make in working with them. Then, four key skills will be presented to use in managing them as clients (and colleagues), including CONNECTING with empathy, attention and respect (EAR Statements); ANALYZING options (teaching them to make choices, to make proposals and to respectfully respond to proposals); RESPONDING to hostile emails and texts with the BIFF Response method (brief, informative, friendly, and firm); and SETTING limits and imposing consequences in 2½ steps (the SLIC method). The presenter’s latest books will be discussed: BIFF for Lawyers and Law Offices (2024) and SLIC Solutions for Conflict: Setting Limits and Imposing Consequences in 2½ Steps (Dec. 2025).
