Tuesday, January 24, 2023 5:00 PM - Wednesday, February 15, 2023 5:00 PM (PST)

Description

The Santa Clara County Bar Foundation’s Law Related Education Committee cordially invites you to participate as a Scoring Attorney for the 2023 Santa Clara County High School Mock Trial Tournament.

The Tournament to be held via Zoom on January 24, January 26, January 31, and February 2, 2023. Scorer Orientation is held each evening at 5:00 pm. Trials commence at 5:30.

The quarterfinals, semifinals and final round will take place on February 7, February 9, and February 15th. These final rounds will be held in person, if possible. There will be separate call for volunteer scorers for the elimination rounds.

People v. Franks is the trial of Jordan Franks, a performer on the luxury cruise ship, Heart of the Ocean. Franks is charged with robbery and battery. The prosecution will argue that Franks committed an assault, robbery, and theft from Billie Scher, a rival thespian.

The pretrial argument centers on the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure. The question is whether Franks voluntarily gave Detective Mavis consent to search Franks’ safe, or if Detective Mavis coerced Franks into giving consent, rendering it involuntary. The program will involve up to 400 high school students from Santa Clara County. Your participation will help them learn about our judicial system.
