The Santa Clara County Bar Foundation’s Law Related Education Committee cordially invites you to participate as a Scoring Attorney for the ELIMINATION ROUNDS of the 2023 Santa Clara County High School Mock Trial Tournament. 

The Tournament elimination rounds will be held in person at the Santa Clara County Downtown Superior Court (located at 191 North First Street, San Jose, CA 95113) on February 7 (quarterfinals), February 9 (semifinals), and February 15 (final). Prior experience as a scorer is required. Scorer Orientation is held each evening at 5:30 pm. Trials commence at 6:00 pm. 

These elimination rounds will showcase the best students from Santa Clara County. Presiders for these rounds include Hon. Vanessa A. Zecher, Hon. Christopher G. Rudy, Hon. Charles F. Adams, Hon. Micael P. Estremera, Hon. Lori E. Pegg, Hon. Cynthia C. Lie, and Hon. Mary J. Greenwood.

People v. Franks is the trial of Jordan Franks, a performer on the luxury cruise ship, Heart of the Ocean. Franks is charged with robbery and battery. The prosecution will argue that Franks committed an assault, robbery, and theft from Billie Scher, a rival thespian. 

The pretrial argument centers on the Fourth Amendment protection against unreasonable search and seizure. The question is whether Franks voluntarily gave Detective Mavis consent to search Franks’ safe, or if Detective Mavis coerced Franks into giving consent, rendering it involuntary. The program will involve up to 400 high school students from Santa Clara County. Your participation will help them learn about our judicial system.
